Optimism and anxiety abounded at the turn of the 21st century. The rapid advancement of new technologies, the globalization of information, knowledge and talent, and the rise of civil society brought us to heights inconceivable only a hundred years earlier. And yet humankind is faced with daunting and puzzling problems as ever: climate change, environmental disasters, aging society, widespread violence, looming energy and food crises, to name but a few. One decade into this millennium, it is time to reflect on the past with an eye for the future. While looking back and acknowledging problems is the first key step, we the Designers of the Future need to be proactive in our thinking and continue to shape the cutting edge and to meet societal needs.
CU:ADS 2011 provides a forum for scholars and practitioners in the various fields of Architecture, Design, and Planning to present ideas, research results, and new research problems and directions. We seek contributions presenting novel ideas in all aspects of the above fields. We welcome technical papers presenting research and practical results, position papers on the pros and cons of specific design and planning proposals, as well as survey papers examining the key problems and solutions under the above theme.
