The International Program in Design and Architecture (INDA), Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University is proud to announce that the project "Archiving Decay: Institutionalization of the Forgotten" by Natthaphat Chotananwut, a second-year student in the program, has won the prestigious "Buildner Student Award" in the global competition titled "The Legendary Highway 14 Tower."
Highway US 14 is an iconic route that spans the state of South Dakota from east to west, from Brookings to Spearfish. Along this route, numerous small settlements with populations of less than a thousand residents stand as testaments to urban decay. This decay is characterized by a decline in population due to migration to larger cities, leading to the emergence of 'ghost towns.'
Natthaphat's project proposes a new landmark for De Smet—an institution that educates visitors about South Dakota’s landscape, history, and the process of decay. The structure serves a dual purpose: it is both a watchtower for the Big Slough ecosystem and a monument to the abandoned cities and houses across the state.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Natthaphat Chotananwut for this remarkable achievement.
